12/04-Driving from Columbia, MO to Raleigh, NC I noticed water towers in the distance, some from miles away. Most often they showed the town's name so you would know where you were without the map. I wish I started to take pictures on that trip, but the idea of logging H2O towers was only in its infancy. This blog came almost a year later when I realized I really enjoy taking the back road to find what neat H2O towers exist. Feel free to post a link or story about your town's local H2O tower.

Turkey Day in MD
The sun was very bright in the car while water tower hunting.
We went hiking at the Patuxent River State Park in MD. Not only did we see deer but we saw a train (this picture is for Connor the train lover).
Sykesville. MD.
On the way to the state park, out of the middle of no where, we came upon the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission campus and the Carroll Community College campus.
The campuses have some great old brick buildings.
Check out all the birds on this tower. I am not sure where we were but had stopped at a bowling alley to ask directions.
Prince William. VA.
On the way home we got into lots of traffic on I-95 so we thought we would take highway 1 home instead. We got off at the Potomac Mills Mall exit. A mall with its own water tower. Perfect!
While trying to find highway 1 in Prince William we saw a couple of water tanks used there.

We passed the Troy (it's pink!) water tower on our way to Ryan's dad's (Avett) extended family Thanksgiving on Saturday in Norwood.
Norwood. NC.
The Norwood water tower we could see from the church parking lot where the reunion was.

Ryan's submission - Sioux City, IA
Ryan submitted this great out-the-window water tower picture from Sioux City.
You know who was from Sioux City? Dr. Noble. He now has an award named after himself.

Melanie's Work Submission - Seaboard, NC
Melanie got this great picture from northeastern NC while inspecting a bulk plant there.
I have thought about starting a letter writing campaign to get more towns to paint their water towers. What do you think?

Work Trip #10 - Fort Bragg, November 3-4, 2006
A little history:
Fort Bragg is the largest Army installation in the world, providing a home to almost 10 percent of the ArmyĆs active component forces. Approximately 43,000 military and 8,000 civilian personnel work at Fort Bragg.
Fort Bragg occupies 161,000 acres , stretching into six counties. Included within this area are Camp MacKall (an auxiliary training complex), 7 major drop zones, 4 impact areas, 82 ranges, 16 live fire maneuver areas, and 2 Army airfields. Fort Bragg is a major city, providing approximately 20 million square feet of office buildings, 11 shopping centers, 28 restaurants, 11 miles of railroad lines, a major medical center, 8 schools, 11 churches, 183 recreational facilities, and approximately 5,000 homes housing over 11,000 family members.
Woodlake Country Club near Vass. NC.
I went to Fort Bragg via Highway 1. You take a left at Vass to head towards the base. My mom needs to look at retiring around here. Tons of golf courses.
Fort Bragg. NC.
As I said it was its own town with at least 2 water towers of its own. There must be some requirement that military bases paint their water towers in this checkered pattern.
Fort Bragg. Airborne. NC.
Fort Bragg hosts America's only airborne corps and airborne division, the "Green Berets" of the Special Operations Command, and the Army's largest support command. 82nd Airborne Division soldiers and others make 100,000 parachute jumps each year at Fort Bragg. The water tower has "AA" on it. I couldn't find what that stands for.

Stephanie's first submission
Stephanie went to NM over the October 12-15 weekend for a friend's wedding. She flew into El Paso and drove the 2 hours to Deming (just 30 minutes north of the Mexican border). The wedding was an interesting combination of Southern and Mexican cultures. Very cool!
She did miss getting the bright yellow water tower as you enter the state :(
This town makes me think of my last name. Maybe I should visit.
