Work Trip #20 - Jacksonville - August 26-27, 2007

So after our vacation to Ocean Isle, my mom and I headed to Jacksonville, NC where I conducted a Rural Recycling Coordinator Training. We saw lots of water towers along the way. It was pretty much a straight shot up Highway 17.

Hampstead. NC.

This water tower was at a school and had a pirate on it. Most likely the school mascot. However, it also had a recycling drop-off site under it. Very cool!




ONWASA.

What the _____? ONWASA is a regional water and sewer utility based upon the self proposed co-operative merger of the systems of local governments who desire to achieve the economies of scale and obtain the ability to negotiate and operate as one unified entity. This innovative achievement has been supported by federal, state and military officials throughout ONWASA's formation.

Then on the way back to Raleigh we took Highway 58 north through Maysville and Pollocksville.

It was like having deja vu. I drove this road 3 times in 1 month. Once for Melanie's wedding, once on this trip and then I had to go back to New Bern for an oyster shell recycling meeting and we took this road.

Labor Day Vacation to Ocean Isle

Well, slowly but surely, I am finally getting around to putting up lots of water tower pictures from this fall. Over labor day we had the enjoyment of going to Ocean Isle for a few days. Took the whole fam - dogs, mom, etc. There are quite a few water towers in Brunswick County on the way to the beach. I have posted about a few of them before. Brunswick County was also where I got my first up-close look at a water tower being made and met my cool water tower friend that builds them.

Calabash. NC.

We always have to go to Calabash for seafood. Evidently there is a Calabash style of cooking seafood. To me it just seems fried.

Then on the way out of town, we drove around the west side of Wilmington and took the new I-140. A nice shortcut to I-40. Along the 421/17 highway there are a number of recycling companies. One is Atlantic Scrap and they happen to have a water tank.

There is a really cool tower at the I-140 interchange. I can't ever seem to get a good close-up picture (it says SAS on it) but it seems to teeter on 3 little legs.

Work Trip #19 - Hickory - August 14-15, 2007

Newton. NC.

This summer I conducted a workshop with Project Learning Tree about recycling and solid waste in Hickory. The first evening I tried to find the restaurant we were meeting at and I totally went to far (all the way to Newton). However, I did find this water tower.

Melanie's wedding in New Bern

Owen and I headed to New Bern for Melanie's wedding. It was a hot weekend but the wedding went off beautifully. We took a detour, on the way there, to see if we could get any new water tower pictures. Instead of taking Highway 70 we went to Wilson and then took Highway 58 south.

Lucky for us it paid off. We say 2 water towers along the way.

Snow Hill. NC.







On our way home we decided to take the road less traveled and boy did we. We took a right into the Hoffman Forest. It turned into a dirt road that went for miles and miles. If we had broken down out there it would have been a long night because that was one desolate place.

Maysville. NC.

Highway 58 lets you out of the forest near Maysville. A very cute town that we ate lunch at.





Jones County.

All these small towns are in Jones County. Which evidently has its own water and sewer program.




Eastern Pines Water.

There also seems to be some other NGOs or something that provide water also.

Work Trip #18 and Vacation - Tampa/St. Pete FL - June 22, 2007

I had the privilege of speaking at a Social Marketing conference in Clearwater Beach this summer. So I extended the trip slightly to include some vacation time.




I took a book with me called "Godless". It was a Christmas present from a friend. The young adult book was a fun, easy read. So what does that have to do with water towers? Well the book was about a kid that made up his own religion that worshiped the local water tower.






Saint Petersburg.

After the conference we headed to Saint Petersburg and came upon a great water tower painted in an aquatic theme. The best part - there happened to be a local recycling drop-off site below the tower. It was like the merging of 2 worlds for me.







It had great paintings. I think this might be one of my top 5 favorite towers.

Trina's Trip to NY

Mount Jackson. VA.

Trina, my old coworker, went to NYC this summer and took some great pictures for me along the way and while there.

This tower is an apple basket. I actually had to search it on-line.

Rooftop towers.

There are tons of water towers on roof-tops in NYC. I told Trina how I had read about this initiative to save them for historical purposes so she did some great hunting for me while there.

Another new state - New Hampshire

Owen's parents took a trip up north this fall. Here is a water tower picture from them in New Hampsire.

Months and months ago this great water tower picture was sent to me. When I first looked at it I thought it was dented on top. The black spots were deceiving but I guess it is meant to look like a soccer ball.

I apologize for my absence

As you can tell by my lack of posts, things have been busy. I have been traveling and taking pictures of towers but just not finding the time to put them on the blog. I posted some tower pictures in September from a trip I took in May. Wow, that is a long time ago.

My New Years Resolution is to get up-to-date with my blog. Can I do it?
