This is a strange looking water tower but my water tower building friend from Phoenix sent it to me. I need to check in with him and see if it is finished yet.
12/04-Driving from Columbia, MO to Raleigh, NC I noticed water towers in the distance, some from miles away. Most often they showed the town's name so you would know where you were without the map. I wish I started to take pictures on that trip, but the idea of logging H2O towers was only in its infancy. This blog came almost a year later when I realized I really enjoy taking the back road to find what neat H2O towers exist. Feel free to post a link or story about your town's local H2O tower.

Smiley Face in IA
Adair. IA. One of our new interns at work is from IA and took this picture for me while home over Christmas. Want some Adair history? Read below.ADAIR WAS LAID OUT IN THE SUMMER OF 1872 BY GEORGE c. TALLMAN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ON LAND THAT HE OWNED. THIS SITE WAS SELECTED BY THE ROCK ISLAND & PACIFIC RAILROAD AS THE SPOT WHERE THE ROUTE LINKING THE EASTERN AND WESTERN BOUNDARIES OF THE STATE WOULD MEET. IT WAS THE HIGHPOINT OF THE ROCK ISLAND RAILROAD IN IOWA AND IT IS LOCATED ON A RIDGE FORMING THE WATERSHED DIVIDE BETWEEN THE MISSISSIPPI AND MISSOURI RIVERS.
ADAIR WAS THE SITE OF THE FIRST TRAIN ROBBERY IN THE WEST, AND THE WORLD'S FIRST ROBBERY OF A MOVING TRAIN. ON THE EVENING OF JULY 21, 1873, A MILE AND ONE-HALF WEST OF ADAIR, JESSE JAMES AND HIS NOTORIOUS BAND OF OUTLAWS, WHO HAD LEARNED THAT THERE WAS TO BE A $75,000 SHIPMENT OF GOLD COMING THROUGH ADAIR, STAGED THE ROBBERY. HOWEVER, THE SHIPMENT WAS DELAYED AND THE ROBBERS ONLY COLLECTED ABOUT $3,000. THE GANG FLED TO MISSOURI, WHERE THEY DIVIDED THE MONEY AND SPLIT UP.
TODAY, ADAIR IS KNOWN BY TRAVELERS FAR AND WIDE FOR THE SMILING FACE ON ITS WATER TOWER THAT CHEERS THEM AS THEY DRIVE ACROSS IOWA ON INTERSTATE 80! A HUB OF MANUFACTURING AND FARM BUSINESSES, ADAIR IS STILL AN ACTIVE RAILROAD CENTER.

Work Trip #23 - Wilmington, NC - December 14, 2007
On our way back to Raleigh, after a quick trip to Wilmington, we stopped to fuel up and get lunch in Burgaw. Guess what? Two water towers. The first one was at the NC DOT fueling station and the second one is in downtown Burgaw. Sorry the pictures aren't great. I was using my camera phone.
Burgaw. NC.
