Continuation of Work Trip #9 - Lexington (again) and Anson County, October 26, 2006

This post is for the die-hard water tower lovers. I headed to Wadesboro in Anson County from Lexington, NC. I took Highway 52 south from Salisbury. That road has tons of great water towers. I couldn't get pictures of them all.

Link Taylor. Lexington. NC.

I took this picture the evening of October 25. I headed out to get some dinner and got a nice picture of this water tower with the sun setting. The smoke stack says Link-Taylor which was a wooden furniture company in the early part of the 20th century. The company of course has been sold, merged, split and sold again but furniture is still made in Lexington at the plant under a different name. Read about the history via the link above.

Crescent (set of crossroads). Near Rockwell. NC.

On October 26 I headed out around 6:30AM. Right away, I saw 2 great old water towers outside Rockwell. They sat on high school and middle school property directly across from each other. This one has some great graffiti.

Rockwell. NC.

Continuing on Highway 52 I drove through the little town of Rockwell. If this isn't a scenic highway, it should be.

Albemarle. NC.

In Albemarle there was also a Collins and Aikman (auto division) water tower. The sun was shining so bad behind it the picture didn't come out well.

The next 2 towns on Highway 52 also had water towers - Norwood and Ansonville - however I needed to make my appointment so I didn't stop to get pictures.

SPCC. Wadesboro. NC.

The town of Wadesboro also had some water towers but I didn't get pictures of them. I should be headed back to Wadesboro this winter and will get pictures then.

However, on my way out of town I got this water tower picture. Do you know this says SPCC not PCSC or some other combination? What does SPCC stand for? South Piedmont Community College.

Morven. NC.

I came upon this water tower while looking for the Anson County Water Treatment Plant where my appointment was. I was almost in SC. That would have been a heads up that I had gone too far.

Rockingham. NC.

The plan was to take Highway 1 north from Rockingham to go home. It didn't quite work out that way, but I did eventually make it home.

Continuation of Work Trip #9 - Atlanta, GA, October 22-25, 2006

Mom and I met in Atlanta for the National Recycling Congress. Before it started on October 23, 2006, we headed to the Georgia Aquarium. Here are some cool pictures of that.

Can you believe I was this close to this penguin?

The aquarium also has 4 whale sharks which will eventually get to be the size of 4 school buses.

Atlanta. GA.

Our hotel for the conference was the Omni in downtown Atlanta. Each day we crossed the brick courtyard to go to the conference center, guess what I saw?

Unfortunately this water tower picture was taken with my camera phone so it isn't the best resolution.

oNE yEAR aNNIVERSARY

Can you believe I have had this blog for one year? I didn't really think I would stick with it, but I have. Wow! This is right up there with playing the clarinet for 7 years, swimming for longer than that and now doing yoga (~fairly regularly).

As a child and teenager I kept a diary so this isn't too different but instead of talking about who is "going with" who I take pictures of water towers. Call me crazy but I have really enjoyed it. Thanks again Casey - for the push I needed.

And soon I hope to have another blog for my work called Recycle Guys or RE3. I will make sure to let you all know when that comes out.

Alabama water towers/tanks from chaindropz

See this great post from chaindropz of water tanks. I have heard of Lamberts Restaurant.
Thanks for the submission.

Work Trip #9 - Lexington BBQ Fest, October 21, 2006

At the Lexington BBQ festival there was an area next to our "Green Fest" tent where BMX bike tricks were going on. We had lots of foot traffic at our recycling booth in the morning but it fizzled out by the afternoon.

There were hints of pigs all over the festival. My dad would have loved it!

Lexington. NC.

Of course there had to be a water tower I found. This tower was next to Smurfit-Stone which had provided all the trash cans at the BBQ festival. After looking at their web site, they seem to be very environmentally conscious.

Stylin' in a water tower tee!

Look at the very cool shirt that Ann (with The Scrap Exchange) got me yesterday. Can you identify the water tower?

Then today, I got to the part in my book - The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood - where the girls were hanging out on the old water tower in Louisiana and jumped in to cool off.

They are starting to permeate my life.

Tin Can - No way!

Morganton. NC.

Another submission from Jason.

"This tin can couldn't have picked a nicer place to
live ... taken in Burke County, this tower serves (or used to serve) the N.C. School for the Deaf in
Morganton."

Susan had also given me this picture and I used it in my Keep America Beautiful presentation.

I came upon the tower also, but not from this angle so it didn't make the blog.

SC not VA

Blacksburg. SC.

Here is another submission from Darin and Susan. Darin wants to start his own blog but needs help thinking of a name. Anyone have any ideas?

Orange Beach, Alabama - Road Trip anyone?

Check out this Orange Beach , Alabama, Water Tank Picture from Chaindropz.

Work Trip #8 - Greensboro via Pittsboro - October 6, 2006

A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE, OR IS IT LORAX LANE.

Look at what I found in Pittsboro NC.

This is a shout-out to all my old Lorax Environmental Club peeps from NC State University.

Chatham Mills. Chatham County. NC

This is an old mill that has been turned into a coop grocery store in Pittsboro, NC.

Cole Park Plaza. ~Chapel Hill/Chatham County. NC.

This might look familiar to Meredith since she used to live across the street from it when she went to UNC.

I stopped for lunch at the Village Pizza and Pasta in Cole Park Plaza. The funny thing is the address for Village Pizza is "Chapel Hill", but I know it was over the Chatham County line so I am not sure how to categorize this one.

Can you tell it was a horrible rainy day.

Feeling Lonely

If you read this blog. PLEASE let me know!

Work Trip #7 - Charlotte, Again - October 4, 2006

Charlotte. NC.

On a trip to Charlotte for work this week, I missed my exit and found these cool water towers while getting lost. They were at the intersection of Brookshire Rd and Beatties Ford Rd. It is a historic area and the public building is called the Vest Water Treatment Facility.

I really was in awe of them although this picture isn't that great to show it. I had to take it with my camera phone since I wasn't officially water tower hunting.

Jeanette's submission

Atlantic Beach. NC.

Jeanette, Russ and little Tristan went to Altantic Beach for vacation and snapped this great picture. Thanks for emailing it in!

Historic Chicago Water Tower

Chicago. IL.

When I gave my presentation at the National KAB Conference this summer I made an announcement that folks should email me cool water tower pictures from across the country. Here is my second submission.

The Chicago Water Tower, beautifully photographed at night by Jim with www.preventlitter.org, is so cool. I hope to one day visit it. It was built in 1869 and survived the great fire. It still houses a pumping station for the City.

Benson at Night

Benson. NC.

My buddy with All Creatures Rescue and Sanctuary is always taking cool water tower pictures when someone from across the state adopts a little furry friend and she drives the animal to their house.

Also, check out this web page where you can buy cool stuff and help the cause.

Geocaching and water towers

Gardners School. Wilson County. NC.

A few months ago, I searched Google for water towers looking for my blog and specific town water tower pictures for a presentation I was doing. I never found my blog, but Google now has a search function specifically for blogs and when you search that I am first!

Anyway, when I Googled water towers I found lots of cool links. Some of which I have put in my favorite links to the right. I contacted a gentleman that geocaches to see if he had a picture of a Charlotte water tower for my presentation. He didn't but did send me some links to other cool water tower pictures that he took while doing an inventory of benchmarks and aerial intersection points for the National Geodetic Survey.

I am sorry it took me so long to get these up on my blog.

From Paul, the geocacher, in Cary. -
"Here are some water towers I enjoyed photographing:

That one is a "school tank". Rural school buildings used these to provide a constant source of water during the day. At night, a well refills the tank.

Another one, where I got a setting Moon in the picture:

This next one shows that base of a water tower can be interesting, at times:
